100,000 yuan offered for clues to blast at bank
POLICE are offering a 100,000 yuan (US$15,724) reward for information that will help them catch a man thought to be responsible for a fatal blast outside a bank in central Wuhan City.
Two people were killed, one a 13-year-old girl, and 15 were injured in the incident in Wuhan.
Wuhan police published three pictures of the man they are seeking on its official microblog yesterday.
Surveillance cameras filmed the man riding a white moped around the blast scene. In all three pictures, the man was wearing a white motorcycle helmet with a dark glass visor, making it difficult to see his face. In one picture, he was wearing a green army uniform coat and in another a dark coat.
So far, the cause of the explosion has not been officially announced by the police or the local government as the case is still under investigation.
But Wuhan police responded to a question on its microblog yesterday afternoon by saying the man in the pictures had "blown the victims to death."
The huge explosion took place at around 5:30pm last Thursday outside the gate of a China Construction Bank branch near a middle school.
Police said their preliminary investigation showed the explosion was caused by unknown objects piled up on the sidewalk in front of the bank's gate, but they were still trying to find out who piled up the objects.
According to news website finance.sina.com.cn, an anonymous official with China Construction Bank said a security van was collecting cash from the bank when the explosion occurred.
"The van was not damaged in the blast and it drove away from the scene with sealed cash boxes. No cash went missing in the incident," the website quoted the bank official as saying.
A bank staff member was slightly injured by falling glass while a security guard suffered damage to his hearing.
Tian Jingchao, an official with Wuhan Fire Bureau, said robbers had placed explosives at the bank. But that had not been confirmed by authorities.
