108 Chinese workers held by Philippine police
ALTOGETHER 108 Chinese mining workers have been held by Philippine police in Zambales for involvement in economic disputes, China News Service reported today, citing a Chinese consul to the Philippines.
Many of the workers have legal work permits in the Philippines and some are having their permits updated, Wang Xiaobo, Chinese consul to the Philippines, said.
The workers are safe and sound and have ample supplies, he said. They can enter and exit the mine camp where they are held under the supervision of police and can communicate with their families, Wang said.
The embassy is trying to bring full freedom to the workers, he added.
The workers have been held at the mine camp since last Thursday when mining authorities, police and soldiers raided the chromite mining site at Masinloc of Zambales, 150 kilometers northwest of the capital Manila, according to provincial police chief Rafael Santiago.
