11 Chinese tourists deported, 33 still missing in S. Korea

THE 11 Chinese nationals who deserted a cruise ship in South Korea's Jeju Island are repatriated to China today and will face police investigation to find out the ringleader behind the incident.
Chinese diplomats will pick them up at the airport and police will probe into the case immediately. If it turns out to be a case of organized illegal immigration, the snakehead will face severe punishment, Sun Limin, a Chinese consulate official in Gwangju, South Korea, told the Beijing Times.
A total of 44 tourists deserted the Italian cruiser Costa Classica upon arriving Jeju Island. Eleven were detained by local police and the rest are still missing. The 44 people, in their 30s and 40s, came from Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang and other provinces, Sun said.
Initial investigation showed that they were organized by a smuggling ring. Sun said the incident would not affect the travel of Chinese tour groups to South Korea.
Another two Chinese deserted their group on October 10, also on Jeju Island. Korean police are still searching for them. They suspect the two incidents are related, a South Korean police officer told the Beijing Times.
