11 children die after their bus bursts into flames
ELEVEN South Korean and Chinese children, and their driver, were killed when a school bus crashed and burst into flames in a tunnel in east China yesterday, officials said.
The children, aged between 3 and 6, attended a South Korean international school in Weihai in Shandong Province.
A teacher was seriously injured in the accident, news of which reverberated in South Korea, where its acting president expressed his sorrow at the tragedy.
The Weihai publicity department said that five of the young victims were South Korean and six were Chinese.
Weihai authorities said that the children had been on their way to the Weihai Zhongshi South Korean International School when the accident occurred at the Taojiakuang tunnel around 9am.
An amateur video posted online by the People’s Daily shows cars driving away from the bus, which was stopped near a wall as flames reached the tunnel’s ceiling. The video’s authenticity could not be immediately verified.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
South Korea’s Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn voiced his “grave sadness” over the tragedy, which occurred as the country went to the polls to elect a new president.
Hwang told the foreign ministry to mobilize “all diplomatic resources” to handle the accident and keep the parents of the young victims informed of any developments.
