11 high-ranking officials sentenced on corruption charges

A TOTAL of 11 provincial and ministerial-level officials have received jail terms ranging from life imprisonment to a suspended death penalty for corruption this year.
All the disgraced officials were found guilty of taking at least 5 million yuan (US$750,900) in bribes, Legal Evening News reported today.
Chen Shaoji, a former top political advisor in Guangdong Province, accepted the biggest bribe of nearly 30 million yuan, the report said.
Most of the bribes turned out to be offered by businessmen who needed approval from officials for various projects. The officials abused their positions in government agencies and state-owned enterprises.
Several officials were also convicted of other charges including embezzlement or duty negligence, the newspaper said.
"Statistics since 2006 show that officials involved in corruption are now in more senior positions and the graft amount has continued to rise, " according to Lin Zhe, an anti-corruption expert with the Party School of Communist Party of China.
