11 killed in accidents

ELEVEN people were killed and 37 injured in two separate vehicle crashes in southwestern and central China yesterday, as road accidents increase at a time when millions of Chinese are heading home for the traditional Spring Festival.

A bus rolled over on an expressway near Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province in southwestern China, yesterday morning, killing seven and injuring 24, local authorities said.

The bus, en route from Dongguan in southern China's Guangdong Province to Anshun, in Guizhou, rolled onto the median barrier of the expressway, the Guizhou Public Security Department said in a statement. The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, the statement said.

Separately, a bus carrying 45 migrant workers returning home smashed into a truck early yesterday morning on an expressway in central China's Hubei Province, killing four and injuring 13.

The bus was heading toward Yunxi County in Hubei from Hancheng County in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, said a spokesperson for the Yunxi fire brigade.

Investigations into the causes of both accidents are underway.
