11 people face judicial probe for factory blast

Eleven people responsible for a factory blast which claimed 33 lives in east China’s Shandong Province have been transferred to judicial departments while 21 others were punished, China Central Television reported yesterday.

The explosion, which occurred on May 20 inside a workshop of an explosives manufacturing plant owned by Poly Explosives (Jinan) Co Ltd in Zhangqiu City, killed 33 and injured other 19.

Initial investigation found workers violated safety rules, which led to the accident.

Workers mixed powerful industrial explosive, PETN, when recycling the wastes from the explosive propellant, and put PETN inside the explosives filling machine.

That triggered the blast and the building collapsed.

Investigators from the State Council blamed the incident on the factory’s long-term chaotic management and government oversight.
