11 punished after drug addicts escape from rehab center

Eleven people have been punished after 18 drug addicts escaped from a rehabilitation center on June 24 in Yulin City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Oriental Morning Post reported today.

Three officials at the rehab center in Xingye County and five assistant police officers were fired over the incident in which the detained drug addicts dug a tunnel with bed boards to escape, the report said. Three policemen were suspended over the incident, the newspaper added.

All fugitives had been caught within 24 hours.

After digging the tunnel, the inmates climbed a wall measuring about 5 meters tall and escaped. The staff on duty didn’t realize they had escaped until the next morning, according to the report.
