11 terrorists killed in failed attack
ELEVEN terrorists were killed on Friday during an attack on a police patrol in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The assault, which happened in Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, was an “organized, premeditated terrorist assault targeting the police,” Xinjiang police said in an official statement yesterday.
Eight terrorists were killed by police during the assault, while three others were killed by their own explosives.
The attack was masterminded by a man named Mehmut Tohti, who began spreading messages of religious extremism three years ago. He was also known to have led a group of 13 suspected terrorists since September 2013, the statement said.
Police said the group listened to recordings and watched videos with a terrorism content, and engaged in physical training exercises.
An investigation found that since last month the group had been buying vehicles and making explosive devices. They had also earlier carried out trial explosions in preparation for their assaults on police vehicles, the statement said.
About 4pm on Friday the terrorists attacked a police patrol. They traveled in cars and on motorbikes, and were armed with explosive devices and machetes, it said.
Two police officers and two civilians were injured in the attack, and five police vehicles were damaged or destroyed, the statement said.
Police seized dozens of explosive devices and knives.
Friday’s incident followed a similar attack on January 24 in which six terrorists were shot dead as they assaulted a police station in Xinhe in the Aksu Prefecture.
