110 entries add up to a record lottery win

A MAN, described as being in his late 40s, has become the biggest lottery jackpot winner on the Chinese mainland after it was confirmed that 110 of the 117 top-prize winning entries in the Dual-Colored Balls Tuesday raffle were on three tickets he bought at an outlet in Beijing.

His share of the winnings amount to 570 million yuan (US$89 million).

The owner, surnamed Liu, of the outlet which sold the tickets told reporters he recalled the buyer as being over the age of 45.

A frequent customer at Liu's outlet, surnamed Wang, said the buyer was a man wearing green outdoor clothing with a big knapsack on back. Wang said he was next in line to buy a ticket and saw him paying 220 yuan for 110 entries of the same combination of numbers.

"I was impressed by what he did as it was very rare among the buyers I know," Wang said. "I never met him before at the stall."

The head of the Beijing Welfare Lottery Center said yesterday no one had yet claimed the prize but it would take steps to protect the winner's privacy if the 110 stakes belonged to the same individual.

"We just wait until the winner contacts us," the official said. "We will adopt protective measures and discuss with the winner over the way to take the money."

There were 117 top prize winning stakes in Tuesday's raffle, with Beijing reporting 111 stakes sold, each worth 5.18 million yuan.

In addition to Liu's outlet at a budget hotel in Sanlitun South Street in Chaoyang District, a store in Niushan township in Shunyi District also sold one stake.

Four other stakes belonged to buyers in the provinces of Liaoning, Jiangsu, Hunan and Guangdong while the other two winners were from Yunnan Province.

August 11 is the deadline to claim the prize according to lottery rules while 20 percent of the winnings need to be paid as income tax.

China's previous biggest lottery winner emerged last June in Zhejiang Province when a man won 565 million yuan.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, gave 20 million yuan to charity, making him the most generous lottery winner so far.

Many previous lottery winners have worn masks or sun glasses when they came to claim their money in a bid to protect their identities.
