1.18m yuan joss stick sold

THE chance to burn the first prayer joss stick at tomb of Fu Xi, one of the earliest ancestors in the Chinese legend, was auctioned for 1.18 million yuan (US$179,687) yesterday in Henan Province, reported the China News Agency.

Thousands of people, with the crowd extending for kilometers, gathered at the Fu Xi Tomb in Huaiyang County, Henan, in a festival to worship prehistorical legendary figure, Fu Xi, who taught Chinese people to fish and hunt and invented the Eight Trigrams, which are the elements of the taji diagram.

The crowd from home and abroad gatered early in the morning for the ceremony.

Only one person could enjoy the honor of burning the first joss stick, which traditionally shows the sincerity of the follower. Henan Zhengyin Real Estate Co and Henan Yuxintai Investment and Guaranty Co jointly paid 1.18 million yuan to burn the first joss stick.

A middle aged man, representing the two companies, lit the first joss stick before thousands of others.

The first cup of holy wine for the worship ceremony was purchased for 80,000 yuan by Luzhoulaojiao, the liquor giant of Hebei Province.

Fu Xi was born nearly 5,000 years ago, and is the first of the Three Sovereigns of prehistorical ancient China, the other two are Pan Gu and Nu Wa. Huaiyang was the center of Fu Xi's clan thousands of years ago.
