12 arrested for coal mine flood that claimed 12 lives
TWELVE people have been arrested and six officials suspended from their posts after 12 miners perished in a flooded coal mine in southwest China's Sichuan Province in September.
Investigators found the flooding of Zengjiagou Coal Mine in Dazhou City was caused by illegal operation, Sichuan Daily reported today.
The owner was found to have ordered the digging of the mine's safety pillars for remaining coal and boring through deserted water-filled tunnels, thus causing flash flood, the report said.
There were 30 workers down in the mine when the flood happened and only 18 managed to escape. The rest were drowned.
