12 missing after ferry sank in Yangtze

TWELVE people went missing after a ferry sank in the Yangtze River in Maanshan, east China's Anhui Province early this morning.

The ferry, carrying five trucks, three cars and two mopeds, sank around 1:40am while it was crossing the river from Maanshan to Hexian.

Nine persons have been rescued so far and are in stable condition, local officials told Xinhua News Agency.

Six rescue vessels are searching for the missing people in the shipwreck area and an investigation into the cause of the accident is under way.
