TORRENTIAL rains spinning off from Typhoon Fanapi left 13 people dead and another 34 missing in landslides yesterday in south China's Guangdong Province.
The fatalities were reported in Xinyi, one of the cities in Guangdong that suffered the heaviest rainstorm in more than 100 years.
Typhoon Fanapi, which made landfall in Guangdong's neighboring Fujian Province on Monday, wreaked havoc in Fujian and Guangdong before weakening into a low pressure system at 5am yesterday.
The typhoon packed torrential rain in most parts of Guangdong Province in the 24 hours from 9am Monday to 9am yesterday.
The average precipitation topped 100 millimeters, the worst in more than 100 years, the provincial weather bureau said in a statement.
It said precipitation totaled 550mm in 24 hours in the worst-hit Shuangyao Township in Yangchun City.
Heavy rain triggered floods and landslides in Maoming City.
In Fujian Province, six counties reported more than 200mm of rain in 23 hours after the typhoon made landfall on Monday morning.
In Taiwan, residents waded through ankle-deep mud to clean up their homes yesterday, after massive flooding spawned by the typhoon killed two people in the south of the island, and caused tens of millions of dollars of damage, authorities said.
Typhoon Fanapi made a direct hit on the island on Sunday, dumping more than 1 meter of rain in some places.
After crossing Taiwan, the typhoon slammed into Fujian Province on the mainland.
