THIRTEEN people were yesterday jailed over a pollution incident in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region that threatened the drinking water of 1.5 million people.

Three of those jailed at courts in the region were environmental inspectors. They allowed plants to dodge pollution inspections and discharge industrial effluents containing heavy metal cadmium into the Longjiang River from April 2011, the courts said.

Zeng Juefa, fomer deputy director of Hechi City environmental protection bureau, was jailed for four and a half years for dereliction of duties and taking bribes.

Lan Qunfeng and Wei Yi, former head and deputy head of an environmental inspection team of Jinchengjiang District in Hechi City were jailed for three and a half years for the same charges.

Zeng took bribes of 45,000 yuan (US$7,335) while Lan and Wei got 20,000 yuan.

Polluter Guangxi Jinhe Mining Co Ltd was fined 1 million yuan. Three managers were sentenced to three years in jail, suspended in two cases.

The pollution was discovered on January 2012. It threatened the drinking water source of Liuzhou City, home to 1.5 million people.
