13 killed, 10 missing in worst flood in Sichuan
AT least 13 people died and 10 others were missing after torrential rains hit the northeast part of Sichuan Province in the past three days. Local media said floods also injured 156 people.
So far 321,000 people in Bazhong, Guangyuan and Deyang cities have evacuated to safe places after heavy downpours triggered the worst floods in the region in 160 years, the West China City News reported today.
More than 600 rescuers rushed to the disaster areas to search for survivors, local authorities said.
The heavy rain started around 4:20pm on Friday with precipitation exceeding 200 millimeters per hour in most of the affected areas. In some towns such as Huaishu and Jinpeng, the rainfall reached 417 to 460 millimeters per hour.
Officials said about 9,000 houses had collapsed and 19,700 were damaged in the rain. Three main roads and some bridges were flooded. Economic damages were estimated at 696 million yuan (US$109 million) by yesterday.
The province's flood control headquarters yesterday upgraded its flood alert from yellow to red. Headquarters officials said it was rare to activate a contingency plan to fight flood in mid-September.
