13 students injured as knife gang hits dorm

AT least five men armed with knives burst into the dormitory of a vocational college in southern China yesterday and slashed nine students, injuring one of them seriously.

Four students had been wounded in an earlier confrontation, bringing the total number of injured to 13.

The early-morning attack took place in Haikou, the capital of the island province of Hainan, when five or six men burst into the dorm at the Institute of Science and Technology, the China News Service reported.

It said eight were wounded slightly, while one's hand was severed. Two students remained hospitalized with wounds that were not life-threatening, the report said.

The violence began with a confrontation late on Tuesday between some of the college's students eating at a food stall outside the school and men from surrounding villages.

Four of the students were attacked with knives and police were called, but left after inquiries, the report said.

The villagers then called for reinforcements and attacked the school at 2:30am.

Meanwhile, police in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have detained a man who stormed into a night school with a knife and gun.

Some primary students were in the classroom when the man, 48, ran into the school in Baotou on Monday night, China International Radio reported yesterday.

A male teacher disarmed the man and police were called. Officers seized the weapons and said the man reeked of alcohol.
