13,000 officers in hunt for Nanjing killer
More than 13,000 police officers have been mobilized to search for a man who shot dead a customer outside a bank in Nanjing on Friday.
Armed police and police cars have blocked all major and secondary roads in the eastern Jiangsu Province capital, with many other officers searching public places. Two helicopters are also involved in the search.
The city's public security bureau has tightened security in banking outlets and self-service areas, and offered escorts to people making large withdrawals, Xinhua news agency reported.
The man police are looking for is said to be a suspect in six cases of armed robbery in two other cities over the past seven years. He is said to be particularly cold-blooded as he always shoots his victims in the head.
On Friday, the suspect, believed to be in his 40s, shot a man who had just left a branch of the Agricultural Bank of China in Dongmen Street after withdrawing 200,000 yuan (US$31,700) at 9:50am.
The 42-year-old victim was a construction company worker.
Pei Jun, deputy director of the Nanjing Public Security Bureau, said the suspect is believed to be the same man who shot and killed six people and injured another two in Changsha, capital of central Hunan Province, and the southwestern city of Chongqing in a string of robberies which began in 2004.
Four of the incidents were in Changsha, the latest being last June where a man opened fire during an attempted robbery before fleeing empty-handed.
Nanjing police released more details of the suspect yesterday.
They said he often takes buses, likes surfing on the Internet and seldom talks to others.
He is between 1.70 and 1.80 meters tall and of medium build. He has dark skin and splayed feet and speaks nonstandard Mandarin in a Sichuan dialect, the police said.
Police said he may have served in the army and always points to what he wants when buying breakfast without speaking. He always wears a cap, sunglasses and gloves.
They did not say where or how they had obtained these details.
Police said a total of 150,000 yuan was being offered for information leading to an arrest.
Anyone with information should call (025) 110 or (025) 8442-1501.
