131 dead pigs found in Yangtze tributary
AT least 131 dead pigs have been dumped in a major river in east China’s Jiangxi Province that provides drinking water to the provincial capital, local authorities said yesterday.
The water authority of Nanchang City, Jiangxi’s provincial capital, first discovered dead pigs on Saturday in a section of the 758-kilometer long Ganjiang River, a major tributary of the Yangtze River.
By Tuesday evening, 131 carcasses had been collected. They are believed to have been carried from the upper reaches of the river, according to the water authority.
Operations collecting carcasses are still under way in the river.
Tests of water intakes in the city by the environmental and health authorities showed that tap water is safe for drinking, according to the municipal government’s information office.
The pig carcasses collected have been disposed of safely, said officials.
In March last year, thousands of dead pigs were found in the Huangpu River in Shanghai, leading to public concerns over tap water safety and a major operation to recover the carcasses.
Zhejiang Province’s Jiaxing City, located on the Huangpu River’s upper reaches, was believed to be the source of the dead pigs on that occasion.
