1,332 Xinjiang children rescued from criminals
AUTHORITIES in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region said yesterday that since last May they have rescued 1,332 Xinjiang children who had been forced to steal in other parts of the country.
Most of the children are between the ages of 10 and 18 and were made to steal by criminal gangs after being lured into leaving their hometowns for cities in east China, said an official with the region's civil affairs department.
Last April, Xinjiang launched a campaign to locate and rescue the region's children in order to help them resume normal lives.
Some were reunited with their families, while other returnees were placed in government-run shelters to receive schooling and vocational training, the official said.
The regional government is building a 50 million yuan (US$7.9 million) center to house and offer training to rescued children.
