14 Chinese sailors rescued from Somali pirates
A TOTAL of 26 crew members of a Taiwan-registered fishing boat, including 14 Chinese sailors, have been rescued from Somali pirates, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday on its website.
The fishing boat FV Shiuh Fu No. 1 was seized by pirates off the coast of Somalia in December 2010. Among the 26-member crew aboard the ship, 13 were mainlanders, 1 Taiwanese and 12 Vietnamese.
The crew was freed last night by Chinese Navy ships that are patrolling the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters. They will be taken to Tanzania before returning home.
The Foreign Ministry has asked the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania to provide accommodation and medical care to the crew members.
China has also notified Vietnam of the rescue.
