14 charged as prisoner runs con from inside
Fourteen people have been punished for their roles in a case in which a convicted kidnapper was allowed to run a confidence trick from his prison cell.
According to a report by CCTV yesterday, inmate Wang Dong, who is incarcerated at Nehe City Prison in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, used WeChat to dupe women out of cash and blackmail one of them into having sex with him.
Wang used the messaging app to contact women, and after winning their trust tricked them into investing in various “projects,” the report said.
It did not elaborate on the nature of the investments, but said one woman parted with 80,000 yuan (US$12,800).
According to a report last week by the Oriental Morning Post, Wang also used the phones to engage in cybersex with the wife of a police officer. When the woman sent Wang naked pictures of herself, the convict blackmailed her into visiting the prison to have actual sex with him.
The CCTV report, however, said there was no hard evidence to support that claim.
