14 detained in smuggling of 60,204 cameras from HK
THE country's biggest photographic equipment smuggling operation in recent years has been busted in south China's Guangdong Province, Beijing News reported today.
Shenzhen City police detained 14 suspects at the Gongbei Customs on the border with Hong Kong in February. Another was granted bail.
The smuggling ring leaders, surnamed Yuan and Lao, mailed equipment parts from Hong Kong to Macao and used the Guangdong-Macao Highway to smuggle the goods into the mainland. All the drivers who helped the ring have regular jobs. They were paid about 1,000 yuan for each cargo box.
Between January 2011 and February, the gang smuggled in 60,204 cameras, 13,623 lenses, 1,025 video cameras, 483 flashes, and 348 projectors worth more than 400 million yuan (US$63.38 million).
