14 missing hikers found safe in Sichuan mountains
A team of 14 hikers, including three from Shanghai, which went missing in the Siguniang Mountain area of Sichuan Province for 12 days, has been found safe and is expected to leave the mountain around 10am today.
Zeng Fanrong, an official with the management center of the mountain, got in contact with Tang Yanghua, the team's guide, at 8:30am this morning. All members are safe and they are hiking out the mountainous area, local news portal scol.com.cn reported today.
The team consisting of nine hikers, a guide and four luggage carriers camped at the Haizigou area on October 1. Three days later, as planned, they hiked out and was not heard after that.
The team's planned route is closed to hikers, but they ignored the ban. Several hikers have died or gone missing in the area in the past few years, which prompted the authorities to close the region.
Six rescue teams were dispatched to search in the steep, high-elevation terrain in southwest China.
