14 more survivors after fishing boats sink

Rescuers found 14 fishermen alive and retrieved four bodies yesterday as they continued their search for 58 others missing in the South China Sea after Typhoon Wutip sank three fishing boats since Sunday.

The boats, from south China’s Guangdong Province, had 88 fishermen on board when they sank near Shanhu Island in the Xisha Islands, about 330 kilometers from the island province of Hainan.

Fourteen survivors were rescued on Monday.

Zhang Jie, a spokesman for the Hainan Maritime Affairs Bureau, said 22 vessels and four airplanes were still combing the sea for more survivors.

Huang Honghui and Gong Zhimei were among the 14 rescued yesterday. They were drifting amid big waves in a life raft when they were spotted from a helicopter.

Lifeguard Li Haitao was winched down to their raft from the helicopter and helped airlift the survivors to safety.

Huang told rescuers their raft began to leak after drifting at sea for two days and nights. The pair suffered only minor injuries in their ordeal.

Strong gales and waves have hampered rescue efforts, but the sea water temperature in the area is over 20 degrees Celsius, which means a higher chance of survival even two days after the sinkings, according to rescuers.
