14 students injured as school roof blows off
WINDS blew the roof off a school building in a northeast China city, injuring 14 students inside.
A 500-square-meter steel sheet was peeled off by the wind from the four-story building of the No. 6 Primary School of Dehui City, Jilin Province, on Wednesday morning, the Jilin-based City Evening News reported yesterday.
The steel sheet hit 20 students and 14 had to be sent to the Dehui People's Hospital for treatment. The other six were not hurt.
As the wind was only light on the day of the incident, parents suspect the roof might have been weakened when workers removed a parapet while doing maintenance, exposing edges of the sheet.
Two students suffered severe injuries, but are in a stable condition, Zhang Guoqing, vice director of the hospital, told the newspaper. The rest had minor scratches.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
