15 arraigned for illegal kidney trading
SIXTEEN suspects were charged with the crime of illegal organ trade, selling 51 kidneys in nine months and earning 10.34 million yuan (US$1.65 million), the Haidian District People's Court in Beijing said yesterday
One doctor, who was involved in the country's largest organ trade, died of disease before the trial so only 15 suspects appeared in the court.
Zheng Wei and his partners, including four surgeons, allegedly performed kidney removal surgeries in a rural clinic in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province and in a villa house in Beijing's Haidian District and sold 51 kidneys to uremia patients.
Most of the suspects admitted their crimes but the doctors said they were cheated by Zheng Wei and thought they were cooperating with a Beijing Hospital for kidney transplants.
Zheng, the chief suspect, looked for organ donors on the Internet. Though the success rate was low, the profit was very high, up to 10,000 yuan per case, the prosecutors said.
He got to know Zhou Peng, a doctor in Xiaoxian County, Anhui Province, and offered him 25,000 yuan for each surgery.
Zhou allegedly rented an operation room in a rural clinic in Tongshan County, Jiangsu Province and invited surgeons Zhao Jian and Yang Guozhong and anesthesiologist Zhao Hui to help him.
Prosecutors said that between March and June of 2010, the group harvested more than 20 kidneys. In July 2010, Zheng's business suffered a big blow when their delivery car crashed, destroying three kidneys. Afterwards, Zheng rented a villa in Beijing to do surgeries locally.
Zheng allegedly paid donors 25,000 yuan for one kidney and sold them for 220,000 yuan each to patients.
