15 babies rescued after police bust baby trafficking ring with 78 arrested

FIFTEEN infant were rescued with 78 suspected baby traffickers caught in a recent crackdown on a cross-provincial baby trafficking network, said police from southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

The network was found to have trafficked infants from Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, a poverty-stricken region where baby trafficking is rampant, to east China’s Shandong Province, West China Metropolis Daily reported today.

After a two-month investigation, Liangshan police launched the raid on January 15, catching totally 78 suspects in two regions, among whom 36 are from Liangshan. Also, 15 babies were saved, it reported.

The 36 Liangshan natives and 15 babies were transferred back to Liangshan yesterday. DNA tests to confirm babies’ identities are ongoing.
