15 die in Xinjiang terrorist attack

Fifteen people, including police officers and community workers, were killed and two others injured in a terrorist attack yesterday afternoon in China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

A report on www.ts.cn, a major news portal in the region, said three community workers found several suspicious men with knives while visiting a family in Bachu County near the city of Kashgar.

As weapon-grade knives are outlawed, they reported the case to their superior. Suddenly, these men who were hiding in the house earlier held the three community workers hostage, according to the report.

Police and more community officials rushed to the site and were attacked by these ethnic Uygurs. Three hostages were killed in the fight and the gang set the house on fire, the report said.

Six attackers were shot dead and eight were captured by police. Preliminary investigation showed the gang was planning a terrorist attack when they were spotted by community officials, the report said.

The investigation is ongoing.
