15 infected with HCV at hospital
A SECOND hospital in Anhui Province has infected kidney patients with the hepatitis C virus through dialysis treatments.
At least 15 of 77 kidney patients treated by Yicheng Hospital in Anhui's Anqing City have contracted hepatitis C during dialysis, the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China's Anqing committee confirmed yesterday.
Another 24 patients receiving treatment at Yicheng Hospital have also been diagnosed with the virus, although no one knows yet how they contracted the disease, according to the committee's press release.
Hepatitis C has a latent period for between two weeks and six months. "Some of them may have had the disease before taking the dialysis treatment," the department said.
A task force found the infections were due to inefficient sanitary procedures.
Last month, Anhui authorities confirmed 19 patients contracted the virus during dialysis treatment at a hospital in Huoshan County.
