15 seized over syringe attacks in Xinjiang
POLICE in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have caught 15 people after a series of random attacks on pedestrians with syringes in the regional capital Urumqi, a regional government official said yesterday.
Four people have been arrested and six detained, said Zhu Hailun, Secretary of the Committee of Political Science and Law in Xinjiang.
He told a government press conference that police were still investigating the cases, which were difficult to crack because of the random pattern.
Most victims didn't realize they had been attacked until the attackers escaped, and the nine victims included people of Han, Uygur, Hui, Kazakh and Mongolian ethnic background, Zhu said.
So far no deaths have been reported and no victims have shown signs of infectious disease or poison. The crimes were condemned by all ethnic groups in the region, Zhu said.
