15 sprayed by unknown liquid by foreigner in Kunming

FIFTEEN Chinese people were sprayed with unknown liquid by a foreigner during a conflict in Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province on Tuesday.

The 15 people became slightly sickened in the eyes and so received a total of 20,000 yuan (US$3,246) in compensation, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The incident started at around 10:21pm on Tuesday when a foreigner riding a motorcycle along a narrow and crowded lane, located in Wuhua district and popular among foreigners for numerous bars, quarreled with a street vendor for some traffic problems. The clash escalated to a fight since they could not understand each other.

The foreigner hid himself in a nearby café when the vendor and some of his friends were storming outside. Fearing damage or injury, the café owner, also a foreigner, sprayed unknown chemical liquid into the crowd, leaving 15 with an uncomfortable feeling.

The foreign motorist and the vendor later reached reconciliation, and the café owner paid the compensation.
