1,500 join Guangzhou subway drill, some sickened by smoke
Guangzhou held a subway evacuation drill yesterday and more than 1,500 volunteers took part in the exercise on Metro Line 4, a local newspaper, New Express, reported today.
The drill simulated the situation that a passenger brought an inflammable chemical into a train and caused an "explosion" at the Huangcun Station. When the platform permeated with smoke, "passengers" began to evacuate.
Police came after receiving reports and rescuers arrived within ten minutes to help "the wounded."
A student volunteer used one hand to cover her mouth, saying she felt nausea, and began to vomit onto tissue napkin. Three other volunteers also felt sick because the smoke inside the station was too thick and irritating.
Guangzhou Vice Mayor Xie Xiaodan said the Metro company should improve its emergency plans after he oversaw the whole exercise.
Sparks and fumes on a Metro Line 8 train this Monday caused panic among passengers who opened train doors with emergency switches and walked in the tunnel. Monday's incident shut down the Metro service for nearly three hours.
