15-day Spring Festival proposed
THE Chinese New Year, the Spring Festival, holiday should be extended to 15 days from the current one week, top political advisers suggested during the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Beijing.
Extending the holidays would not only stimulate tourism and consumption, but give people proper rest and relaxation after traditional Spring Festival activities, Cheng Ping, vice chairman of the Zhuhai Committee, said in Beijing, the Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday.
For migrant workers, the reunion time is too short as they need to travel long distances. And business efficiency during the traditional Spring Festival period is lower because of fewer workers, Cheng said.
This suggestion was echoed by several delegates including Yan Qi, vice chairman of Chongqing Industrial and Commercial Association.
Yan said a 15-day holiday for the festival would ease traffic problems and provide more job opportunities in service industries.
