15-year jail term for former top official
A FORMER top official in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has been jailed for 15 years for taking bribes of more than 10.95 million yuan (US$1.79 million), a court said yesterday.
Li Daqiu, 61, abused his powers to seek benefits for 17 companies and individuals between 2003 and 2013, while he was Party chief of the region’s Hezhou City and vice chairman of the political advisory body of the Guangxi Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Since Li admitted his crimes, revealed details and exposed other officials, he was given a lighter sentence, said the Intermediate People’s Court of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province.
The court also seized his personal assets of 2 million yuan, China Central TV reported.
Li was placed under investigation for disciplinary violations in July last year.
Two months later, he was expelled from the Party and removed from public office. He was tried in Yanbian this August.
Media reports claimed that Li played a role in the illegal mine exploitation in Hezhou, a city rich in a variety of minerals, including gold, silver and tin.
The mining industry was dominated by people with ties to government officials and mafia-type organizations, the 21st Century Business Herald reported.
It said that Li was deeply involved in this.
