15-year term for driver who killed 2

AN unlicensed drunk driver who sped into a crowd at a roadside market in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, killing two people and injuring another 23, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail, the Jixi City Intermediate People's Court determined yesterday, news portal Dbw.cn reported.

Zhang Xijun, a technician, was convicted of endangering public security with dangerous means.

Zhang, who had been drinking with friends on the night of August 5, knocked down two pedestrians when riding at a crossing in Jixi's Jiguan District, the court said.

Zhang slowed the vehicle to negotiate with the victims. Policemen passing by the site arranged for the injured to get a check at a local hospital.

But suddenly, Zhang sped up his vehicle and rammed it into a crowd of pedestrians and street vendors. Consequently, two people died, seven people suffered light injuries and 16 got minor injuries, according to the report.

A check indicated Zhang had a blood alcohol level of 198mg/100ml, compared with the legal limit of 80mg/100ml.

Zhang has made compensation deals with the victims and their families, the report said.
