16 kids hurt in escalator stampede in Xi'an

SIXTEEN pupils were injured, two seriously, in an escalator stampede yesterday afternoon in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, local news portal, www.cnwest.com, reported.

The youngsters were taking an escalator to an aquarium in the city's Qujiang Polar Ocean Park when the escalator suddenly stopped, causing them to tumble down in a stampede, said the teachers of Northwest Polytechnic University's Primary School.

The children backed the claim of their teachers, but the park management denied it, saying their escalator didn't halt, and provided an 18-second video footage that showed one student fell abruptly and triggered a domino collapse.

The injured students, aged 9 to 12, were immediately brought to the Xi'an Honghui Hospital for treatment, China News Service reported.

Most of them suffered bruises and scratches. One girl needs a surgery to repair her torn tendon, said Dr Luo Yulong of the hospital.

Investigation into the accident is still ongoing, the report said.
