16 officials probed for real estate scam

SIXTEEN government officials in Shenmu County, Shaanxi Province, are under investigation for allegedly abusing their power to raise funds to build a 17-storey apartment building.

A widely-read online post sparked off public anger this month over some officials, including the former county magistrate, the local land and urban planning directors, who bypassed legal procedures to raise money and built the building on Huashan Road last year.

Wang Rong, director of the urban planning bureau, denied the accusations and said the local disciplinary department had proved his innocence in a report in June, today's Beijing Times reported.

Wang said he did approve the building's feasibility report in 2008 but had nothing to do with its funding activities nor did he own any flat in it.

Nearly 80 families now live in that building after it was built last December and 22 apartments were reserved for sale.

Most buyers said they bought their apartments from individuals at prices of 2,300 yuan (US$335.44) to 6,000 yuan per square meter.
