16 sailors missing
SIXTEEN out of 18 sailors on a fishing vessel were still missing after their ship sank early yesterday in fierce winds at the mouth of the Yangtze River near Shanghai, the sea rescue authority said.
Rescue efforts continued but officials said the 16 sailors had a "slim" chance of surviving.
Officials with the Donghai Rescue Bureau, a regional emergency force that mainly covers the East China Sea, said both rescued sailers were in a stable condition after medical treatment.
The mishap happened 60 nautical miles north of the mouth of the Yangtze River about 1am when the Zhejiang Province ship capsized and everyone onboard fell into the water.
A rescue vessel set off at 4:03am and did not arrive at the scene until 8:26am after fighting choppy water and strong winds along the way, the authority said.
The rescued sailors were plucked out of the water at 9:39am.
