16,699 officials punished
A TOTAL of 16,699 officials have been punished for violating the frugality guidelines of the Communist Party of China, part of anti-corruption efforts, the Party disciplinary watchdog said yesterday.
Among them, 3,721 had received Party or administrative punishments by the end of September, according to the PartyÕs Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
Last December, the Political Bureau of the commission issued a package of rules requiring officials to improve their work style and refrain from excessive spending. The rules have been strictly implemented since.
Officials who have been punished mostly served at township level and were involved in violations of regulations concerning bans on government building projects, excessive spending on receptions, use of government vehicles for private purposes, unnecessary trips using public money, as well as excessive wedding banquets, according to the CCDIÕs official website.
Other cases included giving and receiving gifts during holidays, using public money for luxury consumption, and indolent work styles.
President Xi Jinping, who took office in March after becoming Communist Party chief in November 2012, has vowed to crack down on corruption at all levels.
