16-year-old kills homeless man to toughen him up for robberies

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy told police he stabbed a homeless man to death with a small knife in Binxian County in northwest China's Shaanxi Province in order to steel his nerves for robberies he planned to commit so he could afford to escape his hometown and move to Beijing, China Youth Daily reported today.
The teenager, nicknamed Xiao Long, is in custody after being detained for the killing. His name was not released.
The teen, who received only a primary school education in his rural hometown of Binxian County in Xianyang City, had worked for hotpot restaurant. But he told authorities he soon realized that the wages were too low for him to afford a train ticket to Beijing, where he thought he could earn big money.
So, he decided on robbery as a way to reach his goal as quickly as possible.
On June 15, Xiao Long and four of his friends went to Binxian County's central plaza intending to rob someone. However, they chickened out.
After his friends left, Xiao Long decided to hurt a homeless man to build up his courage for his robberies.
He told police he stabbed the man to death because he insulted him.
