17 arrested for running online gambling syndicate

POLICE in east Jiangsu Province have smashed a cross-border online gambling ring which involved more than 50,000 members and over 3 billion yuan (US$437 million) in bets over a five-year period.

Police in Changzhou City arrested 17 ring members, including their boss Zeng Weiquan, and seized bets worth about 40 million yuan and 35 computers in a raid in late June, today's Legal Daily reported.

The group had run a Guangdong-based technology company as disguise to operate two gambling websites, attracting millions of punters in Chinese mainland, Taiwan, the Philippines and Malaysia.

The websites were based in the Philippines and Malaysia with their servers registered in Taiwan, police said.

The clandestine gambling network surfaced after some of its customers were caught by police in March, leading to a raid by police in June.

Zeng, a native of Shenzhen, the city bordering Hong Kong, was tempted into the gaming business five years ago after he met some gambling moguls in the Philippines.
