17 coal workers killed in dormitory blast
Eight people were killed and 17 were injured in an explosion on Tuesday night in a coal mine dormitory in central Henan Province. Initial investigation showed some workers illegally stored explosives in their room which was ignited, Xinhua News Agency reported today.
Police in Pingdingshan City have held 25 people in connection with the deadly blast, including the manager of the coal mine in the city's Shilong District. All the injured workers are receiving treatment in the hospital.
According to Zhang Wei, a local district official, all the killed victims were workers living in the dormitory and seven of the injured victims were nearby residents.
Details of the accident are not immediately available as investigation is still going on. Local authorities are now dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy, Xinhua reported.
