17 detained over brutal killing of student on basketball court
POLICE in northeast Jilin Province have detained 17 suspects for hacking a high school student to death last Saturday, including a couple who summoned the gang to beat the student for quarreling with their son on the basketball court.
The couple's son Hao Zhipeng was also detained in Changchun, the provincial capital, and police were interrogating them separately, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.
The 18-year-old victim Wu Tianhao was playing the basketball with Hao when they got into a brawl. Hao called his parents for help. Hao Shengshan and his wife Du Xiajuan then led a mob to beat Wu.
Wu suffered multiple knife wounds in his head and his both hands were nearly chopped off. He died in hospital on Sunday after medical treatment failed.
After the incident, Hao Shengshan, who owns a coal mine company in the province, allegedly said, "We have plenty of money and I can smooth it out." He also claimed to be the relative of a local public security bureau chief.
Changchun police didn't comment on his remarks but have sealed his assets to probe for his possible economic crimes.
Local authorities also promised to deal with the offenders harshly according to the law.
