17 die in truck pile-up

SEVENTEEN people died and four others were injured in a multiple-vehicle accident in Jiangxi Province yesterday morning, police said.

One articulated lorry ran into the back of another and rolled over into the opposite lane of the Shanghai-Kunming expressway at 4:30am.

It was hit by a third lorry, which rolled and slammed into a mini-bus, according to traffic police with Jiangxi Public Security Department.

Twelve people, including nine in the mini-bus, died at the scene. Five others died in hospital, police said.

Two people were hospitalized and were in a stable condition yesterday. Two others suffered minor injuries.

The truck that ran into another in the first instance was suspected of being overloaded. Its driver was allegedly fatigued, said Yang Jianyun, a traffic policeman with Jiangxi Public Security Department.

The mini-bus was overloaded, with 13 people - including four children - on board, according to Yang.
