17 expressways hit by big freeze

HEAVY snow and freezing temperatures have blocked traffic on 17 expressways in northeast China, stranding travelers and forcing road closures.

As of 9am yesterday, heavy snow and ice had led to the closure of 10 expressways and that partial closure of another seven in Liaoning Province, local transport authorities said.

Some roads had been closed for more than 12 hours.

The snowy weather began on Sunday morning and lasted through early yesterday, leaving the province covered in the white stuff, according to the provincial meteorology department.

Snow removal teams have been hard at work trying to clear the roads since Sunday night.

Traffic within the province has been seriously affected, as large vehicles face travel limits on regular roads and some coach services were either canceled or delayed as a result of the expressway closures.

A runway at an airport in the provincial capital of Shenyang was also closed for three hours on Sunday night. It reopened after snow was removed from the tarmac.

The heavy snow has also dragged temperatures down to a new low, with some regions in the province braving conditions where minus 24 degrees Celsius was recorded.
