17 families accused of obstructing public project
PROSECUTORS in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province have charged 17 households of obstructing the demolition work of an urban redevelopment project and attacking 11 law enforcement officials.
It is the biggest lawsuit in China so far against families who refuse to relocate to make way for public projects, the China National Radio reported today.
The prosecutors said these families gathered other villagers to resist demolition workers and erected a platform under a tree to put up protest banners on July 26.
But these families denied the accusation, saying they were just enjoying cool air under the tree when they were attacked by hundreds of armed police and urban management officers. A witness Zhang Wang said one policeman even fired three shots into the sky as warning.
Both police and prosecutors didn't respond to allegations made by the 17 families. The trial is ongoing.
