17 imprisoned for selling meat from dead pigs

A court in Zhejiang Province has sentenced 17 people to prison for processing and selling pork from pigs that had died of diseases, today's Procuratorial Daily reported.

Three main culprits, Dong Guoquan, Chen Xuezhong and Yao Jianping, were sentenced to life imprisonment and 14 others will spend 18 months to 12 years behind the bars, the Jiaxing Intermediate People's Court ruled yesterday.

Dong and Chen opened an unlicensed slaughterhouse in a village near Jiaxing City in the late 2008 and Yao joined their illegal business as the third shareholder in October 2009.

Between January 2009 and November 2011, they collected about 77,000 dead pigs and sold meat products for 8.65 million yuan. They also worked with other convicts to sell meat from dead pigs to other regions, the court said.
