170 ‘surplus’ teachers get new careers in security

MORE than 170 teachers in Shayang, central China’s Hubei Province, have been deemed surplus to requirements due to a lack of pupils and been given alternative jobs as security guards, local media reported yesterday.

The job swaps were implemented at more than 100 schools and kindergartens across the county, according to a report by the Chutian Jinbao newspaper.

Despite the teachers’ many years of experience, they are now “surplus” to the county’s needs due to a decline in the number of school-age children, the Shayang Education Bureau was cited as saying.

Reemploying them as security guards serves a dual purpose, as the teachers are already familiar with the school grounds and aware of potential hazards, it said.

For Chen Dong, a 53-year-old history teacher-turned-security guard at Shayang Vocational Education Center, the change in status has been hard to accept.

“I have been a teacher for more than 30 years, but now I have nowhere to teach. It’s humiliating,” he said.

Despite the education bureau’s assertion that the move is only temporary and that teachers will regain their jobs once pupil numbers rise, Chen remained unconvinced.

“In June, I was a history teacher, but by the time the summer holidays were over, so too was my career,” he said.
