18 nabbed over new buildings at risk of collapse
EIGHTEEN people have been arrested following a TV report about jerry-built buildings in Nanyang in central China’s Henan Province.
Prosecutors allege they manufactured and sold inferior products that could have caused major accidents.
They included Su Hongyin, project manager of the Nanyang Construction Group, and Zhao Xiaochi and Hu Kunkun, officials with the Henan Siming Construction Management Co Ltd, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The safety risks were highlighted on June 25 by China Central TV on its Focus Report program.
It found workers at a residential complex in Nanyang were using machines to elongate steel reinforcing bars.
On average, each meter of bar was stretched by at least 24 centimeters.
Experts on construction materials told the program that the practice was extremely dangerous because the thinner bars would not have been able to support the weight they were supposed to, leaving the buildings vulnerable to earthquakes and collapse.
After the bars were stretched, the construction company could earn an extra 700 yuan (US$113.73) per ton, and 520,000 yuan from each building. The complex consisted of more than 10 high-rises, CCTV reported.
The same problem was found in a high-end commercial complex downtown and a community built for relocated residents.
